Sakhalin Taimen, known as “Ito” in Japan, are a rare and highly protected species. Fishing opportunities are limited, and regulations, open seasons, and permitted fishing periods vary depending on the area. Anglers should always check the latest local regulations before fishing.
In May, Lake Shumarinai opens its Taimen fishing season. This large man-made lake has a managed population of stocked Taimen and is one of the best-known destinations in Japan for anglers hoping to encounter this incredible fish.
For anglers interested in pursuing wild, native Sakhalin Taimen, June, September, and October are some of the key months when fishing opportunities are available in certain rivers of Hokkaido.
Tackle & Fly Fishing Style
For single-handed fly rods, #8–#10 setups are commonly used.
For double-handed or Spey rods, #8–#12 setups are typical, depending on the river, fly size, and conditions.
Fishing is generally focused on large streamer patterns.
What makes Hokkaido Taimen fishing particularly interesting is the variety of water. While Spey fishing can be used on larger rivers, some native Taimen inhabit surprisingly small rivers.
In these tight environments, traditional overhead casting may not be practical. With a single-handed rod, bow-and-arrow casts and roll casts are often the main techniques used to present large streamers.
It is a very different style of Taimen fishing—and one of the unique experiences Hokkaido can offer.
