White-Spotted Char Fishing in Hokkaido, Japan – Amemasu Fly Fishing

In Japan, the White-spotted Char is commonly known as “Amemasu.” For anglers visiting eastern Hokkaido, Amemasu is one of the most exciting and iconic fish to target.

These fish move between rivers and the sea throughout the year, creating several very different fishing opportunities depending on the season.

Best Season for Amemasu Fishing in Hokkaido

The main season for White-spotted Char fishing in Hokkaido begins in August.

From August through November, Amemasu start moving upstream as they prepare for the autumn spawning season. This is one of the main periods for targeting them in the rivers of eastern Hokkaido.

Depending on weather, river conditions, and location, it is also possible to find Amemasu during the winter. However, winter fishing in Hokkaido can be extremely challenging because of snow, ice, and very low temperatures.

Early Spring Amemasu Fishing – March to April

Another interesting season begins in early spring.

Around March, White-spotted Char that have spent the winter in the river systems become active again.

From March through late April, they can be targeted in rivers before many of the migratory fish begin moving toward the sea.

Early spring fishing can be challenging because of Hokkaido’s cold weather and changing river conditions, but it can also provide unique opportunities for anglers looking for Amemasu outside the main autumn season.

Sea-Run White-Spotted Char Fishing

After spring, many Amemasu move into the coastal waters around Hokkaido.

These sea-run White-spotted Char are particularly exciting fish. After entering the ocean and feeding in the rich coastal environment, they can become extremely powerful.

For anglers interested in targeting Amemasu in the sea, I recommend late May through June.

Fishing for sea-run Amemasu is a completely different experience from targeting them in small rivers. Their speed and strength make them one of my favorite fly-fishing targets in Hokkaido.
