Best Seasons for Trout Fishing in Hokkaido

Hokkaido, Japan, is one of the world’s great trout fishing destinations. From the legendary Sakhalin taimen to yamame, rainbow trout, White spoted char, and other beautiful wild trout, anglers have the opportunity to target an incredible variety of species.

However, after traveling to New Zealand every year for fly fishing, I’ve realized one thing: truly big trout are never easy to catch. Hokkaido is no exception. As fish grow larger, they become increasingly cautious and challenging to fool.

The key is choosing the right season for your target species. Here’s my recommendation based on years of guiding and fishing across Hokkaido.

Char (Amemasu)

Best Season: April and late August to early November

Large migratory Dolly Varden become active during these periods, offering the best opportunity to catch trophy-sized fish.

Rainbow Trout

Best Season: June to October

This is the most consistent period for rainbow trout, with excellent dry fly fishing during the summer months. While more challenging, April and even winter can also produce exceptional fish for experienced anglers.

Taimen

Best Season: June and October

Some fisheries can also be productive during May and September, depending on water conditions and local regulations.

Brown Trout

Brown trout are not my specialty, but they are well known for producing large fish even during the colder months. Many experienced anglers specifically target trophy browns in winter.
