Rainbow trout
Rainbow trout are one of Hokkaido’s most popular trout species and can be found in rivers and lakes across much of the island.
Fishing is possible throughout a long season, but June to September is especially recommended, when dry fly fishing can be particularly exciting.
For anglers looking to target wild rainbow trout, the Tokachi and Obihiro area is one of our recommended destinations, offering numerous rivers and a variety of fishing environments.
Both fly fishing and lure fishing are available, with locations and techniques selected according to the season and current conditions.
White-spotted char
White-spotted char, known as Amemasu in Japan, are the sea-run form of Ezo iwana and one of my personal favorite fish to target in Hokkaido.
They can be caught in different seasons, but April and September through November are especially exciting for fly fishing. Depending on the conditions, anglers can enjoy everything from nymph fishing to streamer fishing.
Spinning is also an excellent way to target Amemasu, making this species enjoyable for both fly and lure anglers.
Powerful, beautiful, and uniquely Hokkaido, Amemasu are a fish well worth targeting during your fishing trip.
Dolly varden
Dolly Varden in Japan generally do not grow very large, but they are one of Hokkaido’s most beautiful native fish, known for their vivid colors and striking patterns.
The Shiretoko area is one of our favorite places to target Dolly Varden, with clear streams surrounded by wild and beautiful nature.
Light fly fishing and spinning are both enjoyable ways to target these fish, making Dolly Varden fishing a great way to experience the smaller rivers and unique trout fishing of Shiretoko.
Yamame Trout
Yamame trout are one of the main fly fishing targets in the Shiretoko area. During summer, they become very active and often respond well to dry flies, making them especially fun to target with light fly tackle.
Yamame are the freshwater form of cherry salmon (Sakuramasu). Their sea-run form grows much larger and offers another exciting fishing experience in Hokkaido.
Please note that closed seasons and river-specific fishing regulations apply to Yamame, so anglers should always check the current regulations before fishing.

Kokanee
Kokanee salmon, known as Himemasu in Japan, are a popular target for autumn fishing in Hokkaido. They are known for their beautiful colors, especially during the spawning season, and can grow to around 40 cm.
One of our recommended periods is mid-October through November, when anglers can enjoy targeting these beautiful fish in Hokkaido’s lakes and surrounding waters.
Both fly fishing and lure fishing can be enjoyable, making Himemasu an exciting target for an autumn fishing trip in Hokkaido.
Sakhalin Taimen
Sakhalin taimen fishing in Hokkaido, Japan is difficult, demanding, and never guaranteed. Long hours of casting and changing conditions are all part of the experience.
But that is exactly what makes this fishing so special.
A wild Sakhalin taimen is not an easy fish to encounter. It takes patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep fishing even when nothing happens.
